Told from a child’s-eye perspective, this follows the perilous journey from Vietnam, subtly referenced by colour palettes and increased military presence, to a journey to find safety.  Illustrations add weight, power and emotional depth to the story and provide cultural references to signpost the family’s origins alongside their journey.  Controlled artistic media help provide an idea of identity being stripped away and gradually built back in this affecting tale.

I think this book is a good book for older readers and younger readers who have experianced something simalar to this, but not for 3-5 readers. it is a tale about war and conflict, but is very well writen and well drawn and i would rate it a 7/10

I adore the endless sea because it really shows how dreadful war was. I was shocked at the illustrations, I love the 2 images of the waves crashing at the boat and everyone being drowned out and its only the girl and her mother. The drawings are very elegant and I could tell by how you drew it how everyone in that image felt.

In the book: The Endless Sea (written by Chi Thai and illustrated by Linh Dao), we loved how the illustrations really represented the characters emotions at certain parts of the book. We particularly enjoyed the vibrancy of the main characters compared to the other refugees and scenery. One aspect of the illustrations that really stood out, was how the art looked hand-drawn/hand-painted. Though the words were simple, we could imagine the young girl's thoughts and feelings. Although this isn't about the pictures, we love how there is a tie to the author's real experiences. We appreciate The Endless Sea and how hard the author and illustrator worked to create such a heartfelt story. We hope your book will go far. - Arianna and Meera

I like how there's a plot twist in the book and there are not many colours. The page that shows the child's nightmare is really spooky! It uses the same colours as when their boat is sinking and they don't know if they will be rescued.

The colours made me really understand how the girl was feeling.

This book is a great reminder that people who survive traumatic events, will always relive it and it never truly leaves us. I think this book is a great way to show younger children the horrors of the past and that you can never truly forget it. It also reminds us that events like these are still happening all over the world. The illustrations are simple enough for children to understand and the colour scheme is quite simple but the colours are also deep and grey-blue - similar to the sea. In addition, the main character is a child, helping the reader to relate or understand better. Overall, this book is great to help younger children understand that these types of things happened, and still happen today, and that those who survive these types of events are not always fine afterwards, as the author talked about after about their experience and how many things happened afterward.

I liked that the illustrator used the colours to show the different emotions.

This book is very sad but it has a happy ending. I love how the pictures have so much detail and show us what is happening in the story. I like how the colours tell the story - it starts green as they go through the jungle, then grey on the ocean, it gets very dark for danger, and deep sadness then at the end there are warm colours and they are safe.

Josie

Big Bookworms

This book was sad but it spreads the message of how some people must leave their homes using dangerous methods. I liked it and i loved when they got saved, it made me feel for the people who have to do this just to escape a country that should've been safe. It makes you think of the many people whose lives were lost due to them not being fortunate enough to be saved and unfortunately drowned. This book spreads an important message, and in my opinion it should be read to all kids to show them the wider world.

this book has a sad story about a little girl refugee and I think that the colours of the pictures really show that but when they find a new home that is safe the colours are all happy again. this story also shows that in times of need people are there to help.

Y5 thought the colour palette the illustrator chose sets the tone on each page. The colours darken as the characters face challenges and brighten as their circumstances improve. Y3 thought it was too monotone and not colourful enough. Some children liked the realistic pictures where others thought they were too realistic. Y2 said you can feel the emotions of the story through the pictures. Y4 said it was tricky to see some of the writing on the page. They liked the realistic rain and the blending of the colours.

Personally, I think they showed the stress of when they were nearly drowned really well, and the panic of when they thought that the ship was going to abandon them - I also like how they showed the mum's panic over having to help her child get a better life.

After reading The Endless Sea, we thought about the things that we value and the things that we would like to pack if we could, if we had to leave our homes. Inspired by The magic box by Kit Wright, we wrote our own version of the poem as a group. I will put in my box, A comfy, clean carpet, A dog that flies, A satin chair and the book of my dreams. (Anayah) I will put in my box, Black and grey, furry, sheets that cover you in the night Thick and thin, long and short clothing, Dark, ruby red roses that smell of perfume. I will put in my box, juicy, orange-yellow, fresh mango (Safiyya) the majestic scent of sunflowers, thick marshmallows, dissolving in my mouth. I will put in my box, the pillow from my dreams, the gleaming of a starry sky, the tip of a blue pencil gliding across the page. (Musa) I will put in my box, A magic carpet flying high, A silk, flying horse, And the pop of a pop-it. (Abubakr)

The children liked the washed out colour palette and how the pale colours were used at the start and end of the book. The children noticed how the books colours got darker and darker towards the middle of the story and how this reflected the scariness of travelling across the endless sea. The children gave this an 8/10.

The St James Shadowers

I thought the Endless Sea was a really good book because of the illustrations. I love how they included lots of different styles of art, which made it really diverse and interesting. I feel like this book showed a lot of emotion but the actual story didn't like take over - it was a good balance of illustration and text. In my opinion the book could be read/studied by anyone - whether they are in a year 5 class being introduced to the topic for the first time, or someone a bit older who knows a lot about it, I feel it is a very good book for everyone.

Isabelle

The book tells the interesting and heartfelt story of a young child and her family as they make a perilous journey across stormy seas to escape discrimination in Vietnam and attempt to find safety in Britain. I liked the illustrations as they showed the dangers of the journey across the ocean by using watercolours, for example, when she and her family were nearly thrown off by a huge wave, the colours and the style used stood out to me and made me pity the girl and her family. There is also historical accuracy during the entire story when the refugees are travelling across the seas to find safety, which refers to the actual story of the refugees as they migrated to countries like Britain to find a safe home, food and shelter to escape the hardships they faced in their home countries. Overall it was a touching story with historical accuracy and beautiful illustrations.

This was a very emotional read (it almost left me in tears!), but a very good one. I thought that the visual representation was very good, and there was a good relationship between the illustration and the text- it was almost as if the illustrations gave the text more meaning to it. I also liked the formatting of this story, and it felt very easy to flick from page to page knowing what was happening, even if the part of the story feels overwhelming or sad. A very good book though.

It was a very good book. In The Endless Sea, I love the part where the girl and her family successfully escaped without getting caught. I dislike the part where war happens. I would recommend this book to everyone above 10 years old.

Are you looking for a book with an emotional perspective? Look no further. This book is unique and it is a beautiful story with wonderful illustrations. I love how the writer reflects in their own story and puts it out there. I admire the message of this book and recommend it to anyone looking for a great read.

I liked that the endless sea was like the author's story about how she moved and it was really hard for her and her family. I really like the watercolours the illustrator used and the drawings she made.

Trisha

This interesting and deep book hooks you in the second you set your eyes on the front cover. I definitely recommend you to read this book if you have it. I thought that The Endless Sea was a very deep and interesting book. In my opinion the book is very deep because behind all the drawings there is a deeper meaning like the use of the colours for the darker the sadder and scarier. And for lighter colours mean happier and light hearted meaning. In addition, colours like the black background for the peep hole with the white popping out for the outline of the rain and port hole. The black background with white port hole is the authors\illustrators favourite page\illustration. I agree about their favourite illustrations because I definitely agree but all the drawings are amazing but that illustration definitely stands out. Now for the interesting part of my first line. I think the book is very interesting because it has lots of deep meaning (connecting to the above) but the first page was already really enticing. From then on the book was as exciting as a rollercoaster that never ends. As well as the fact that the book uses lots of blue because of the sadness but also the little girl who we are hearing her perspective is always normally wearing red. In conclusion the book was overall one of the best books ever!

Eva

I think this book was good because it had an important message. Also, the storyline was intriguing, although a bit sad. The colour palette was very effective at conveying the emotions the girl was feeling. I also liked the subtle details you can notice if you look carefully, such as the fact that the photographs at the front can be seen on one of the later pages. Overall I would probably rate it about 4 and 3/4 out of 5.

I think it is amazing! Me and my friend read and we just could not stop. I found it very very interesting and I also think it would be good for little ones to read since it is quite short. I loved the bit when they got rescued!!! But I think a parent might need to read it to the child.

Prabhsharan

It is a very good book. Me and my friend read it together. My favourite part was when they got rescued by the big boat. The book is a bit sad, but it is still good for little ones, though I may suggest that a parent will read it to the child.

Alexander

LomondSchoolHelensburgh

The book for me showed that the girl in it gets left out and they use lots of colour but when she moves away it is lots of dark colours and makes it very sad and the face expressions are very telling of the emotions that they have. They use lots of different art styles and I really like the different layouts of the book. I like how sometimes there is not as much details in the image, so it is much easier to understand what is happening around the words. I rate this 4/5 because I enjoyed it and would read it again (even though I don't read much, I did like this one).
