Welcome to the Group Leaders’ Area — a space for librarians, teachers, youth leaders, volunteers and parents running a shadowing group. Here you’ll find guidance and free resources to help you run your group with confidence.
If your question isn’t answered here, visit the Group Leader FAQs.
The Shadowing Scheme is flexible and open to groups reading with children and young people aged 5–18 years.
Each longlisted and shortlisted title includes recommended age guidance on its book page.
If you’re unsure about a title’s suitability, we recommend seeking parental permission before children take part. If desired, a template permission letter for taking part in shadowing is available here.
We trust that shadowers will be guided by their group leader, librarian, teacher or parent in terms of selecting suitable, enjoyable and age appropriate material from the lists.
Sign up for the Shadowing Newsletter to receive the latest news, tips, competitions, and links to new content from shortlisted authors and illustrators — plus fun activities for your group.
When you register your group, you’ll receive an email with your group name and passkey. Keep these safe — you’ll need them for online shadowing activities, such as:
Need a reminder? Request your passkey here.
Shadowers are invited to share reviews and artwork responding to the books — a brilliant way for authors and illustrators to hear from their readers.
As a group leader all reviews will be sent to you for review before they are published. Please ensure all contributions are:
