A deceptively simple story that offers a complex and convincing portrayal of how it feels to be lost in oneself. It offers an accepting, empowering and honest look at what it means to have a low mood and the ways in which this can affect our outlook on life and our perspective on the world around us.

Expertly crafted illustrations capture the psychology of early childhood and the significance of deeply felt emotions. Bold, eye-catching colours and subtle, spare artwork brilliantly showcase the child’s moods whilst unexpected and accomplished use of die-cuts help to place the child at the centre of their physical and emotional landscape in a way that is creative, innovative and that offers real insights into feelings. Charismatic and sometimes chaotic sketches have a childlike quality in this powerful yet personal book.

This book is about feelings and I like the story very much. It is lovely to compare feelings to colours and things to help young children understand. The illustrations are great and my favourite part in when the mum says "I love you however you are feeling". I would recommend the book because it teaches you that it does not matter how you feel, you are still you.

This book is a wonderful example of how emotions affect us and our daily lives. One day, a young child feels grey, and, explaining it in a poem to their Mum, they find out that it's ok to be grey sometimes, but the real happiness is still inside. A wonderful example for children.

This book is about a girl who feels Grey, why means she is sad anf lost. The author compares the grey to a puddle in the pave, ent but then says that there can be sunshine there too. You can be any colour of feel any feeling and it is still you. I love this setory because it is inspiring. My favourite part when the girl realises feeling sad is not forever. I recommend this book when you feel sad.

Grey is a book about someone feeling under the weather and they go through the different colours and feelings. Then their mum comes and says it doesn’t matter if you are any of those feelings, but you still have those feelings inside you, and my love won’t change even if that is grey. I like the story as it tells you that everyone feels grey sometimes so don’t worry. I loved the illustrations because they were simple shapes but also you can tell what everything is. My favourite part was the bit where the mum came in and talked to him. I would recommend this book to everyone above the age of 5 to 10.

I liked this book because it's true that you don't always have to be happy. It is written like a poem so it is easy to read. I like all of the different colours for the different moods.

Greay is about a little girl who feels grey one day. She does not normally feel grey but today she does and she does not like this feeling. By greya she means she feels lonely and sad. But her mum comforst her and tells her she loves her no matter how she feels. I love this story as it has a meaningful message about good days and bad days and how it's OK to be sad sometimes. The illustrations are amazing and are not fully coloured in, which make them special. My favourite part is when her mum tells her that she loves her however she feels or is. It is such a beautiful story and I really recommend it to younger readers. I would rate this book 5 stars. I hope you enjoyed this review. Thank you! :)

This book was about a person who felt grey. I liked the book because the book explained that you can be grey or any other colours. The colours are like feelings, and grey means sad. The illustrations some were very dark but some were more coulourfull and I liked them all. My favourite part was when it described the coulours the person could be. I would recommend the book because it is so good and I think eneyone could like it.

I really liked this book because, although its audience is very young, it still tells us about how you won’t always be happy, and that sometimes, you will feel negative emotions as well, but in a simpler and easier to digest way. It wasn’t hard to understand at all, and the illustrations match it really well too, perfect for little kids!

The book is about a girl who is sad, feeling "grey". Through the book, the girl compares her feelings to colours, whic I thought was very clever. The end was also lovely as she gets comforted by her mum. I like this story bacause it shows you that there is nothing wrong with feeling sad sometimes, and happiness is alwasy here, deep inside your heart. The illustrations are a bit like they were made by children. They are colourful and with a pencil effect. I like the illustrations because they are simple and relaxing to look at. My favourite bit is when the girl's mother appears and hugs her daugter. It shows that love is everywhere and that it is infinite. I recommend this book to people who are having a bad day because according to me the moral of the book is that happiness is always with you.

We weren't sure about this book when we first looked at it, as it looked sad, but we all loved 'Charlie and Lola' when we were smaller, and recognised the drawing style of Lauren Child, so we were happy to read it. We like the tactile cover and the 'smudginess' of the character, and we really liked the different drawing methods used throughout the book, especially the page drawn in chalk, and the one with the scrunched up paper/scribbled face. We also really like the cut-out pages. We noticed the bright colours that contrasted with the grey of the character, and how the colours then transferred onto the character at the end. We haven't seen or read a book like this before - it's a sad book with a happy ending, and reading it, you would feel better by the end. We think it's an important book because there are some days that you do feel grey (some of us use blue to describe those feelings) and it's OK to feel that way, but there are lots of different things or people that can help you feel better and more yellow (which we think is a happy colour, along with green.)

I really liked GREY. The colours in the book start off dull, but then drops of colour appear and then boom, all the primary colours come into play. This is like a mirror to how the little child is feeling. I also enjoyed the story and I remembered the artist, Lauren Child, from an old book! used to read. 9/10

My thoughts on the illustrations are that they expertly portray the theme of the book which is that it is ok not to feel happy all the time and that there will always be people who can help you . This is shown in the contrast of the colour grey and the brighter colours which can help a younger child understand the concept of the book without having to understand every word .

Grey is a story all about how it’s OK to feel sad, colourless and lifeless. It helps everyone understand that it’s fine to not feel any emotions. Towards the end of the book, the mother comes and says that it’s fine to not feel anything and that you will always be loved, no matter what colour you are. I do not believe that Grey would be the same without the illustrations. I love how the drawings aren’t perfect, reflecting the fact that it’s OK not to be at your best all the time. For example, on page 3, the things on the table aren’t very neatly coloured in. The cut-outs in this book are phenomenal! They relate to the story so well and help move the plot along. They make me laugh and smile, connect and sympathise. One of the best (in my opinion), is the one on pages 32 and 33. It shows the moon and the mother and then she says ‘and my love won’t change even when it’s grey’. The last thing I have to judge are the first and last 2 pages of the book. They both have a climbing frame which appears twice throughout the story. The first one is grey and the last one is colourful. This shows that things will get better, even if you’re feeling grey.

The book is about this little girl who feels like she has no purpose in her life and she just feels grey. I think the book is really good and it can help you to understand that you can feel grey and that is okey. The illustration is a bit scruffy but some people have a different opinion to me and that is fine with me. I think the illustration is very very good but I prefer a neater way of drawing. I love how it gives you a sad and then happy feeling inside. I think all children could read this book.

The book is about a boy who feels like the colour grey: sad and lonely and like he does not belong. The girl in the story normally feels sunshine yellow or balloon orange bright or treetop green or new idea white or night sky black, but today, she only feels grey. Her mum said, " It's ok to feel grey. You don't have to be bright everyday. Today you feel as if all the colours have gone. Grey is lonely. Grey is when we feel we don't belong." The message of the book is that you don't always feel like bright colours. You can feel like any colour you want. All of these colours are your feelings.

"It’s OK not to be OK." What an important message to share; not just with younger readers, but with readers of all ages! The bold illustrations convey this message perfectly, and children will love the delightful surprises revealed through the cut-outs. The story gently portrays the child’s sadness, her feelings of isolation and confusion, and ultimately her reassurance that she’s simply having a bad day, that things will get better tomorrow, and that she can find support from loved ones. The book 'grey' written by Lauren Child is about a boy who struggles with ''feeling grey'', meaning he struggles with feeling his happy and confident self from a young age. I think this book is great for young readers as it shows them that mental health struggles are real, and you can feel them from a young age. This is important because as children grow up to become teenagers, adolescents, young adults and adults, they could be one of the 31.7% of women or 29.9% of men that struggle with mental health from a young age. The boy in Child's book 'Grey' experiences feelings of sadness, isolation and anxiety, making the reader feel some sort of sympathy for the boy, although some readers may feel empathy or compassion. In which case this book would also be good for the reader in the sense that they now know someone relates to feeling 'Grey' The happy turn at the end of the book would also give the reader a feeling of hope knowing that the boy finally felt happy after this constant feeling of feeling isolated, unhappy and grey.

The book is about a little boy who is feeling grey, which means he he feelings sad. We like the story because it has a good ending with the mummy telling him she loves him. Our favourite bit is the end as the boy feels happy and gets cuddles.

This book is about a young girl who isn't feeling very happy and it makes her worried and confused. I love this story because it is explaning to young children that it is OK to be sad (it would be a good reminder for adults too!). There are lots of fun cut outs, which make you try and guess what is on the next page. The author is using the colours to help express how the child feels and the drawings remind me of the Charlie and Lola stories my mum used to read me when I was 3 or 4 years old. I got the message that it is fine to not always feel happy and that sadness does not last forever.

The book is about a little kid who feels left out and finally realises thanks to his mum that they are just having a bad day. The illustrations bring the story to life. I love the illustrations where the mum and her child are looking out of the window, happily smiling. This illustrated book is all about a child who is feeling down and "Grey". The illustration adds a key part to the book and I think without it the book would seem very dull. The creative cut-outs throughout the pages add texture and feel to the story as well as making the book more interactive. I love how on the last page the child is by themself and then when you flip the page it shows them with their mum through the cut-out. I also really enjoyed the message conveyed through this book. Grey by Laura Dockrill and Lauren Child is a heart-warming story about feelings and accepting your mood. The illustrations in the story are magical, making the read highly enjoyable and calming. I really enjoyed reading this book! I think that young readers wouldn't really understand the meaning behind it but as you get older you start to understand that it is okay to feel different emotions. You can't be happy all the time but that is not necessarily a bad thing. It also has amazing illustrations that help understand the way the girl is feeling in the book. Flicking through the pages, its fun and interactive to see the cut out bits to portray how shes feeling. Explaining how we feel isn't always easy and I think young children probably don't know how to do this so using colours is a clever way and something that parents can use too. The book depicts lots of bold colours and has a lot of meaning to the words. The book has around 7 words per page and I think that was the an average amount for the age group. I think that the illustrations are very good and really do help a child see what colours are and how to explain the way they feel. The story is a simple story but covers a difficult topic, if children don't understand their emotions it was very good at helping them to colours to explain. This book is actually pretty good for 3 years and above because it illustrates about, if your young and your feeling pretty down lately someone can always come and help you out. This is telling us that a mothers love will never go away, a mother will always love you even if your feeling grey, like how the story says. At the end of the story it's showing that the little girl is not depressed anymore, which makes people who read this book feel better. The colours used throughout the book are sued to represent the correct emotions being felt by the character- for a young child being able to express emotions may be difficult so using colours is very clever. The pictures in the book are also very good- they help a young child to see colours correctly but also facial expressions linked to emotions. The story is a very good story and I think a 3 year old would find this interesting because of the cut out style used as well.

At first glance it doesn't look very inviting but with the carefully designed pictures and the layout on each page the message soon becomes very clear . The way that the story develops is good, it shows that when things aren't making us feel happy it is okay to feel sad and 'grey'. The words used in the book are very good and a simple way of explaining emotions to young children by making a link to the things they can see - "don't feel the sunshine yellow" is a very good way of writing. I think this book uses illustrations very well to support a young child recognise and explain their emotions - well done!

Alfie

The WH shadowers

In the book "Grey" I think the words and colours used really will help a young child with their colours, emotions and words. For Example on the first page it says I'm not sunshine yellow, then next to those words it has a yellow circle representing the sun (this will help young children understand that the sun is yellow). A lot of the pictures are cutouts but colours can be seen underneath her 'grey' which shows that colours will always shine through just like positive emotions - it's okay to feel 'grey' sometimes and I think at a young age its important to know that and using colours to explain emotions is a very clever part of this book. I think these illustrations are amazing and probably the best one I've seen so far.

A great picture book for children of a young age. I think it helps children recognise from an early age that not feeling yourself is okay - it allows them to explain how they are feeling through colours. The use of colours and the simple but beautiful illustrations are great for helping young children to describe and understand their feelings. The story itself is heart-warming and perfect for when our children (or classrooms full of children!) are having an off day - not to tell them to cheer up, but to tell them that all of their feelings are okay!

This book is about a child who feels as if all of their colours have disappeared, but their mum shows them that even when they feel "grey" and like there is no colour, "each one of them is still inside you". The book itself starts off with no colours and gradually the colours appear back into this child's life which implies that when we feel empty, over time we will start to see these colours come back into our lives again. I think this is a beautiful story and really easy to read, therefore I would recommend this book to anyone.
